Pokémon Type Effectiveness

Type effectiveness is the multiplier that decides how much damage a move deals. Most single-type matchups use 2×, 1×, 0.5× or 0×, while dual-type defenders can reach 4× or drop as low as 0.25×.

4Extremely Effective · 400%
2Super Effective · 200%
Normal Damage · 100%
½Not Very Effective · 50%
¼Highly Resistant · 25%
0No Effect · 0%

Normal 1× matchups are left blank in the charts so that only the important results stand out. Because the multipliers are printed as text, the meaning never depends on color alone.

How Pokémon Type Effectiveness Works

Every damaging move has its own type. When that move hits a defending Pokémon, its type is compared with the defender type on the Type Chart, and the matching multiplier is applied to the damage.

Move Type is the type of the attacking move, such as Fire, Water, Grass or Electric. It is not always the same as the attacking Pokémon type, so always check the move type when using the chart.

Pokémon Type Weaknesses

A type weakness is an attacking type that deals 2× or more damage to a defending type. You can find the weaknesses of any type by reading its column in the Type Chart and looking for 2× results.

Higher multipliers mean the attack is more effective. For example, Ice-type Pokémon take 2× damage from Fire, Fighting, Rock and Steel moves.

Pokémon Type Resistances

A resistance is an attacking type that deals 0.5× damage, while 0.25× is a strong resistance and 0× is a full immunity. Read the column of a type in the Type Chart and look for 0.5× or lower to find its resistances.

Fire-type Pokémon, for example, resist Bug, Steel, Fire, Grass, Ice and Fairy moves, taking only 0.5× damage from each.

Pokémon Type Immunities

An immunity is a matchup where the attacking type deals 0× damage, meaning the move has no effect at all. Read the column of a type in the Type Chart and look for 0× results to find its immunities.

Ghost-type Pokémon, for example, are immune to Normal and Fighting moves, so those attacks deal no damage at all.

Pokémon Dual-Type Chart

Most Pokémon have two types. Pick an attack type and two defense types to see the combined multiplier. Dual-type effectiveness multiplies the two single-type matchups together, which is how 4× and 0.25× results appear. Every type page also includes a full 18×18 dual-type matrix.

Pokémon Type Chart FAQ

What is the Pokémon Type Chart?

The Pokémon Type Chart is a table that shows the damage multiplier between every attacking type and defending type. Rows are attack types, columns are defense types, and each cell gives the multiplier used to calculate damage.

How does Pokémon type effectiveness work?

When a move hits a Pokémon, the move type is matched against the defending type on the Type Chart. The resulting multiplier is applied to the damage. If the defender has two types, both matchups are multiplied together.

What does 2× mean in the Pokémon Type Chart?

2× means the attack is super effective and deals double damage. For example, Fire-type moves deal 2× damage to Grass-type Pokémon.

What does 0.5× mean in the Pokémon Type Chart?

0.5× means the attack is not very effective and deals half damage. It usually means the defender resists the attacking type.

What does 0× mean in the Pokémon Type Chart?

0× means the attack has no effect and deals no damage. This is called an immunity, such as Electric-type moves against Ground-type Pokémon.

How many Pokémon Types are there?

There are 18 standard Pokémon types: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel and Fairy.
