Ice Type Chart

Ice is the rarest of the 18 Pokémon types. Its moves are prized for their coverage, while Ice-type Pokémon themselves are famously fragile, so trainers usually treat Ice as a weapon first and a typing second.

Ice Type Weaknesses

Ice-type Pokémon are frail on defense — Fire, Fighting, Rock and Steel moves all hit them for double damage.

Ice Type Resistances

The only thing Ice-type Pokémon naturally resist is Ice itself, so they rarely switch in safely.

Ice Type Immunities

Ice has no immunities, meaning every type can damage an Ice-type Pokémon.

Ice Type Effectiveness

Ice-type moves are a staple coverage option — they punish four common types and are barely resisted.

Ice Type Dual-Type Chart

This chart shows how much damage a Ice-type move deals to every combination of two defending types. Rows are the first defender type and columns are the second. Each cell gives the damage multiplier: 4 is extremely effective (400%), 2 is super effective (200%), ½ is not very effective (50%), ¼ is highly resistant (25%) and 0 means no effect. Blank cells are normal 1× damage, and the gray diagonal marks a type paired with itself, which is not a valid dual type.

Ice Type Summary

Ice hits hard and resists almost nothing — a glass-cannon type built on offense.

Ice is one of the rarest types in Pokémon, and most of its value comes from the moves rather than the Pokémon that share its type. Ice-type attacks have superb coverage: almost nothing resists them, and a single Ice move can answer several of the game's most common types at once. The trade-off is fragility, so Ice is often splashed onto other Pokémon instead of being the backbone of a team.

Ice on offense

Ice-type moves are super effective against Grass, Ground, Flying and Dragon, which makes them one of the most reliable answers to Dragon-types. Only Fire, Water, Ice and Steel resist Ice, and no type is immune to it, so moves such as Ice Beam, Icicle Crash and Triple Axel rarely feel wasted. That coverage is why many non-Ice Pokémon still carry an Ice move.

Ice on defense

Defensively, Ice struggles. It takes super effective damage from Fire, Fighting, Rock and Steel and resists only Ice, so Ice-type Pokémon fold quickly to some of the most common attacking types. They usually work best as fast attackers or revenge killers rather than as walls, and they appreciate partners that can switch into the Fire, Fighting and Rock moves aimed at them.

Notable Ice-type Pokémon

Well-known Ice-types include Lapras, Cloyster, Articuno, Weavile, Glaceon and the legendary Kyurem. Many of them pair Ice with a second type — Water for Lapras and Cloyster, Flying for Articuno, Dark for Weavile — and that second type often decides how usable they are, which is why Ice is almost always judged together with its dual typings.
