Steel Type Dual-Type Chart

This chart shows how much damage a Steel-type move deals to every combination of two defending types. Rows are the first defender type and columns are the second. Each cell gives the damage multiplier: 4 is extremely effective (400%), 2 is super effective (200%), ½ is not very effective (50%), ¼ is highly resistant (25%) and 0 means no effect. Blank cells are normal 1× damage, and the gray diagonal marks a type paired with itself, which is not a valid dual type.

Steel Type Summary

The best defensive type in the game, with a remarkable ten resistances.

Steel is the premier defensive type. It resists ten types, resists Stealth Rock, is immune to Poison and cannot be poisoned, at the cost of weaknesses to Fire, Fighting and Ground and a weak offensive profile. That mix of resistances is why so many defensive cores run at least one Steel-type.

Steel on offense

Steel-type moves are super effective against Ice, Rock and Fairy and are resisted by Fire, Water, Electric and Steel. It is a mediocre attacking type on its own, but moves like Bullet Punch, Iron Head and Flash Cannon are valued for priority, flinch chance and reliability on defensive Pokémon.

Steel on defense

Steel-types are weak to Fire, Fighting and Ground and resist Normal, Grass, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Steel and Fairy. Ten resistances is unmatched, and the Poison immunity means Steel-types also shrug off Toxic and Toxic Spikes, making them central to defensive teams.

Notable Steel-type Pokémon

Famous Steel-types include Metagross, Scizor, Skarmory, Corviknight, Ferrothorn, Aegislash, Heatran and Melmetal. Their secondary types and abilities often patch the Fire, Fighting or Ground weakness that every Steel-type shares.
